I have always used soft mattresses and pillow tops and my back would always hurt when I got up. After several therapies and back massages, the pain still persisted. And then out of blues, I went to sleepover at my friends and in the morning I woke up with slight back pains. After inquiries, she convinced me that I needed a firm mattress.
